A lot of people discovered him when his second novel, The Sisters Brothers, was nominated for a Booker Prize.

I knew him because he had written a book called Ablutions, his first novel, set in a, well, what would you call it?

How do you call this?

A scuzz bar?

A semi-seedy, let's say.

A semi-seedy bar in Hollywood where everyone, and I mean everyone, is having problems.

Yeah.

And the bartenders are solving these problems by pouring free drinks, which just ameliorate the problems, and the

book gets more and more chaotic as it goes along.
