On May 7, 1976, a call was made to the police in Chicago about a suspicious vehicle.

When an officer stopped by, they found a maroon 1972 for Thunderbird parked on the side of the road.

The hubcaps were missing, the driver's side window had been smashed, and the ignition had been pulled.

When the plates were run, they came back to a Frank Columbo and Elk Grove village, a suburb of Chicago.

The car hadn't been reported stolen, but it clearly had been, so the officer tried to call the Columbo residents, but got no response.

So he sent the report to the police in Elk Grove Village.

A few hours later, the local police sent an officer to the Columbo home to inform them that their car had been found.

On the porch, the officer immediately noticed that there were three days worth of newspapers and that the front door was a jar.

He called for backup, and when it arrived, they slowly entered the house to the front door.

Inside, they discovered the entire Columbo family had been killed.
