Summary

This Passover, Eric Silver joins us to tell the story of the Jewish holiday and leads us through the Seder with all its mandatory cups of wine. He explains why Moses was clearly the first telling of the Hero’s Journey, sings “When You Believe” like an angel, and doesn’t forget to serve the ghost.

This week, Amanda recommends Jewish Literacy by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, as well as Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to a Tribe Called Quest by Hanif Abdurraqib.

Welcome to Spirits Podcast, a boozy dive into mythology, legends, and folklore. Every week, we pour a drink and learn about a new story from around the world. I'm Amanda. And I'm Julia. And this is episode 125, Passover with Eric Silver. I went to my first Passover last year, I think, or two years ago. And so it was really kind of nice to revisit something that I'm not too familiar with, but I have a basic understanding of.

0:24.0

Yes, you know, a really generous and kind listener email to us a few months ago sort of said, like, hey, I know you guys bring up a lot of Christian stories, since that's your background.

0:35.4

But there are a lot of stories that you're only giving one side of. And like the version of this story that exists in Judaism is totally

0:42.9

different or more interesting, probably. And I thought that that was a really good opportunity

0:48.8

for me to expand my perspective and to realize ways that I had been seeing the world in a way that was

0:54.9

erasing other people. And I want to rectify that. So actually, this week, I want to jump

1:00.0

ahead a little bit and recommend a book called Jewish Literacy, which has really been helping

1:04.9

me to sort of have like a 101 on a lot of the stories in the Torah that I just didn't know about and different

1:12.8

Jewish traditions. And it was really well written. It's really brief in each of the

1:18.3

stories. So it kind of, you know, has very much like a 101 level, like a surface level

1:21.9

description. But I'm already like having a list of different like additional reading that I want

1:26.4

to go down. So that is Jewish Literacy by Rabbi Joseph Talushkin.

1:30.1

If you stumble across one that you'd like us to cover Amanda on the podcast, let me know.

1:33.6

I will do some research or find a good guest to cover it.

1:37.1

And I think moreover, listeners, if you have any suggestions as to Jewish stories and holidays that you'd like us to cover, please let us know.

1:44.0

Yeah, absolutely. We get a couple of emails every once in a while. Things haven't quite

1:47.9

aligned, but this is the first one where things have aligned really nicely, and I'm really excited

1:51.8

to cover it. And there's no better guest in the multitude family to bring us the story of

1:57.2

Passover and then Eric, who was, I think, our second ever guest back in

2:00.8

the day with an episode on The Golem.

2:02.5

That is true.

2:03.2

Amanda, you know who I would like to bring to a guest to any dinner party?
