I'm joined once again by Carolina Hurd to discuss her Institute of the Study of War Peace entitled Putin is stealing Ukrainian children.

So you write that one of Putin's goals from the very beginning was to, quote, abduct Ukrainian children and forcibly turn them into the next generation of Russians.

Explain that, Carolina.

So there's several reasons for this.

I think Putin ideologically, he doesn't see Ukrainians as Ukrainians. He sees Ukrainians as confused Russians. And it's been his intent since 2021. He actually wrote an essay in 2021, basically describing almost the ideological underpinnings of what became the invasion in 2022.

This idea that Ukrainians and Russians are one people, Ukrainians are confused Russians,

they must be reunited.

And children, in a lot of ways, are the most understandable targets for this sort of ideological
