So as I get closer to my 40th birthday, I'm just a few years away from that, I've had sort of the humorous

privilege of becoming one of the old guys, right?

If you're in your 20s, you think the guy who's almost 40 is old.

So I'm kind of the old guy now to a lot of the young men in the church and to those who follow me on social media,

again many of whom I've gotten to know pretty well, which is an awesome experience.

Now in reality, 40 is hardly old and everybody who's 50 or 60 or 65 or 70 is going,

Amen, 40, you young whipper snapper.

But I think here's the point to a generation of clueless bastards starved,

for anything even remotely aimed at a trajectory of authentic masculinity,

even a shred of sage advice from someone who knows the terrain is generally welcome.

And one of the things I've noticed in the church, just because you're old

doesn't necessarily mean that you have wisdom. Now I don't claim to be old, but I do have some claim to

a personal history of suffering and therefore to resilience as well.

I've learned a few things along the way. Ultimately, wisdom is a skill developed through patients and failure and long suffering, and it does not, as I said, come automatically with age.
