1 Kings chapter 19 verse 9 and the word of the Lord came to him. What are you doing here Elijah?

He replied, I've been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected

your covenant. They've torn down your altars and put your prophets to death with the sword.

I am the only one left and now they're trying to kill me too. The Lord said,

go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord. For the Lord is about to pass by.

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord,

but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in

the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire and then after

the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out

and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, what are you doing here Elijah? He

What are you doing here Elijah? This is one of the most important questions in the whole of the

Bible. Let me give you a little bit of context for why it's being asked. A few days before God

asked this a question, Elijah is at the center of a spectacle. If you remember he prays down fire

on the altar, rain on the city and labors in prayer on the mountain and between. He was and is our

model for midday prayer, but then just a chapter later. The same prophet is now hiding afraid and

borderline suicidal. He's traveled 80 miles on foot with nothing but the clothes on his back. He

lies down somewhere in the wilderness and says, God have had enough. This journey is too much for me.

So Elijah is standing there in the wilderness at the mouth of this cave alone and afraid when God
