And it was kind of at the beginning of the kind of molecular biology kind of world.

People that I worked with, they were totally what you would call classically trained liberal arts people.

Music, history, art. They were all those things which are just part of their world.

They were exposed to that. of their way of doing science was not a big money thing then you know you had

a small NSF grant or whatever you're doing basic stuff you did it with molecular biology

and bacteria or use whatever you sexually weren't even part of the or you were in

anatomy physiology because it's a medical school But it was not a big money thing.

There weren't like billion dollar grants

and all this kind of crap going on at that time.

That was in 79.

And if you track the progress of that, if you look at the money that's gone in, the way education is gone, there's like a direct proportionality between the increasing in the money,

the increasing in the big science net, and the decreasing in anything has to do with anything

with human decency, humanities, the arts, history, and that education.

Totally separated.

as I was coming out, even in grad school, they were still really well-rounded people, but I'm not sure if that's true anymore

and it's part of the reason that I dragged myself back and I think that that if I've got a purpose, this would be the purpose for whatever time I teach.

And frankly, it's a good gig and I like the place.

I like the people I've found in the humanities department.

Yeah, if you can, you know, shape some brains the proper way, that's good.
