Most people that I know that really like to read the Old Testament, not a massive group of people,

but Proverbs is often a very popular book because you have these very engaging, pithy, easy

to understand, simple statements that can be applied across multiple contexts across the

generations.

What I love is that we can summarize the point and the purpose of the book of Proverbs in first, in Proverbs chapter 1, verse 7. You'd call

that the thesis statement. So there are a lot of chapters. There's more than 30 chapters here.

But if you really want to focus on what are the author or the authors of Proverbs hoping

that you would take away, this is it. The fear of the Lord is the authors of Proverbs hoping that you would take away, this is it.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Now let's think about this in a gospel context.

Who wants to be a fool?

I don't think any of us do, but if we want to be wise, we're somebody who

learns to respect or listen to the Lord. Anciently, the word fear was used more around respect

and awe and a willingness to learn from and listen and to pay attention to. So if we retransulate

this a bit, we'd hear the attention of the Lord

or paying attention to the Lord or listening to the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
