Summary

Welcome to the NEW podcast all about parenting teens with Cat & Nat. Each week we are going to go over topics that you need to know and bring an expert to break down an important topic. New episodes every Monday, go subscribe wherever you listen to your podcasts.

It's no secret that there's a history of sexism, misogyny and hypermasculinity in sport, particularly in elite men's hockey. In elite sport, masculinity is often defined by glorifying toughness, promoting aggression, encouraging 'bro culture', and upholding the locker room 'code'. But what does this mean for parents raising kids who want to take part in sports like hockey? We put our kids in sports so they can make new friends, get active, and learn about sportsmanship - certainly not to fall into a culture of toxicity and misogyny. Dr. Teresa Anne Fowler, PhD in Gender and Sexuality Studies, breaks down her research into the cultural reproduction of masculinity and how parents can work to make change and protect their kids from unhealthy masculinity in sports. For more on Dr. Teresa find her at https://profiles.ucalgary.ca/teresa-fowler.

Wow, welcome to the Monday parenting unfiltered, literally teens because

ooy yoy we definitely need our very own podcast in this category. We decided to create really a

1:09.0

separate podcast of our other podcast because this journey of parenting

1:13.4

has been, I don't even know, something I don't even know if you can

1:18.6

really describe or explain until you're in it, which is really like most of motherhood I guess it's

1:24.3

really hard to explain any part of motherhood if you're not in it and then when

1:29.0

you're in it you're like oh I get it and not that it's scary not that it's scary, not that it's terrible. It's just different and you sort of feel like you're wandering around in the dark without a flashlight. And really, that's why we started this. And Nat and I are not together right now. I'm in my car in a parking lot

1:45.7

because we have seven children and we're in two separate areas and we kept trying to

1:52.4

figure out a plan even though we were in the same place to be together but guess what?

1:57.6

Your teenagers need you more now than they did when you were little.

2:00.7

So that's what's also tricky.
