Summary

On the Spoiler Special podcast, Slate critics discuss movies, the occasional TV show, and, once in a blue moon, another podcast, in full spoiler-filled detail. This week, Dana Stevens, Forrest Wickman and Inkoo Kang discuss Parasite. With Hitchcock-like quality, Bong Joon-ho plays with the audience in the upstairs / downstairs dive into economic inequality. The Kims, stuck on their low social rung jump at the opportunity to latch onto an affluent family. But how long can they keep the ruse up? What will they do to keep up the charade?

Hello, and welcome to this late spoiler special podcast today.

We will be spoiling the new film from Bong Joon Ho Parasite. I'm really excited to talk about this extremely twist-filled movie with Forrest Whitman, Slate's culture editor, who's here with me in Slate Studios in New York. Hey, Dana. Hi, Forrest. I really, really loved this movie, and I feel like maybe the first movie of this year since us, since Jordan Peel's us, that has not only haunted me for a couple weeks after seeing it, but that I can't stop talking about with everyone who's seen it. The minute you ask someone

1:15.0

if they've seen Parasite, you launch into a conversation about it, which often, like the

1:19.9

conversations about us did, you know, get into these interpretive details in different ways

of looking at the facts that are on the screen. So if any

1:28.1

movie ever needed to be spoiled this year, besides us, I think it's parasite. And as per usual,

1:34.4

I'm going to just go around and quickly get your responses for us. I know you loved the movie, too.

1:38.4

You're definitely a thumbs-upper. Yeah. I mean, you know, I think often with these spoiler

specials, we try to get people who have differing opinions on a movie.

1:47.3

So there are some people who are pro and some people who are con.

1:49.4

But there seems to be just no one at this point who is con on this movie.

1:52.7

And I kind of don't expect the world to be a lot of people.
