This week the I am reading from Dr. Jeffrey Long's BICS winning essay 'Evidence for Survival of Consciousness in Near-Death Experiences: Decades of Science and New Insights'.Virtually everyone has wondered if there is an afterlife. This is understandable, given the appropriate concerns about the mortality of ourselves, our loved ones, and all of humanity. The question of an afterlife has been discussed and debated for millennia.As a physician practicing the medical specialty of radiation oncology, which is the use of radiation therapy to treat cancer, I have been intrigued by issues of our mortality. The question of what happens after bodily death is regularly present in my daily medical practice as I work with patients that have a life-threatening diagnosis of cancer. Prior investigations of near-death experience (NDE) combined with the research that I am presenting in this article have convinced me, based on evidence, that our consciousness survives bodily death.BioJeffrey Long is a medical doctor specializing in the practice of radiation oncology, using radiation to treat cancer. As a scientist, Jeff founded NDERF in 1998. He wanted to know if NDEs were real by directly asking the NDErs themselves. The answer is a resounding YES! As a result of his research, he is the author of the New York Times Best Seller, "Evidence of the Afterlife: The Science of Near-Death Experiences." He also wrote "God and the Afterlife: The Groundbreaking New Evidence for God and Near-Death Experience." As a leading NDE researcher and a medical doctor, Jeff has appeared on national media including O'Rielly Factor, NBC today, ABC with Peter Jennings, the Dr. Oz Show, the History Channel, the Learning Channel, and National Geographic. 1:01.8	and this is what Dr. Long has written. At the time of near-death experience, one of the first
1:07.6	and most common elements to occur is the out-of-body experience.
1:11.5	An OBE is defined as the separation of consciousness from the physical body.
1:17.3	When using the term OBE in this article, we will be referring only to OBE's occurring during near-death experiences.
1:25.1	While near-death experiences are unconscious or clinically dead,
1:29.1	their consciousness separates from their body. Their point of conscious perspective usually
1:33.8	rises above their body. From this viewpoint, they may see and hear ongoing earthly events
1:39.4	that may include the frantic efforts of medical personnel trying to resuscitate them.
1:46.0	It is uncommon that consciousness during near-death experiences moves beside the physical body and only rarely goes below the
1:52.1	body. About half of NDEs describe out-of-body experiences with awareness of ongoing earthly events.
