In the early church, there were penances given, and this was both East and West.

Penances were given, sometimes very severe in order for these healings to take place.

Sometimes a person would have to pray for many years before they would be readmitted to the church

in the case of apostatizing or committing grave sins such as murder or adultery.

And prayers would be said by the whole church for these people.

Not only were they doing penitence in some areas, they were not allowed to come into the church.

They had to pray outside, for example, and everyone else would pray for them,

even though they had already been forgiven of the eternal punishment of that sin.

I mean, this goes all the way back. We're talking, what, third century forward.
