Summary

In this episode of The Winston Marshall Show, I spoke with Hungarian government minister, Panyi Miklós, for an in-depth conversation on collapsing birth rates, demographic decline, and why Hungary has made family policy a national priority.

We discuss why falling fertility rates threaten the long-term sustainability of societies, why economic growth is meaningless without future generations, and why Europe is facing a demographic crisis decades in the making. Panyi explains Hungary’s conviction that population decline is a civilisational emergency, not an abstract statistic.

The conversation explores Hungary’s economic reforms, tax cuts, and job creation strategy, alongside its expansive pro-family policies, including housing support, childcare expansion, and major tax exemptions for mothers. We examine how Hungary raised its fertility rate from one of the lowest in Europe, why that progress later stalled, and how war, inflation, and economic insecurity shape family decisions.

We also discuss migration, national sovereignty, border control, and why Hungary rejects mass migration as a solution to demographic decline. Panyi explains how history, culture, and national identity inform Hungary’s approach, and why demographic renewal cannot be separated from questions of social cohesion and cultural continuity.

A detailed and revealing conversation about population collapse, family policy, and whether the West can reverse demographic decline before the consequences become irreversible.

Hello and welcome to the Winston Marshall Show with me, Winston Marshall. I'm in Budapest, Hungary. Why?

0:05.8

Well, I wanted to understand what I believe to be the biggest crisis facing humanity, which is the

0:13.4

fertility crisis, not just in Western Europe, but in the developed world as far away as South Korea and

0:19.8

Japan, and also the developing world

0:21.5

like Africa. Everywhere, as countries develop more, there is a decreasing fertility rate.

0:27.8

Now, in my country, Britain and Western Europe, one way of dealing with that, even from conservatives,

0:33.6

has been to encourage and entice migration and migrants. That has, in the short term, improved

0:41.8

GDP, possibly. But there are negative sides to migration, which I don't think need explaining on

0:48.2

this show. But here in Hungary, they take a different tag. They have not followed the rest of

0:53.8

the EU and the continent

0:55.7

when it came to migration, particularly from 2015. Instead, they have more of an emphasis on

1:02.7

maintaining Hungarian heritage. So we had a look at the Hungarian approach to the fertility crisis,

1:10.0

the birth crisis facing humanity. And since

1:12.0

2010, under Victor Orban, the government has been enforcing various policies to deal with the crisis.

1:17.9

We went through these policies. We had a look at what was working, what was not working, and what we

1:22.8

might learn in the rest of the world from Hungary's 16 years of experience dealing with this dilemma. So I sat down

1:30.7

with Minister Miklosh Pani in Budapest and you will hear from him right now. Before you hear from

1:36.4

the minister who is a spokesperson on pro-natalist policies here in Budapest, I just wanted to say thank you,

1:42.0

thank you for your continued support of the show. Remember to head over to

1:45.1

Winston-martial.co.uk if you want to enjoy ad-free viewing and listening and to have the opportunity to

1:51.5

ask future guests your questions. But without further ado, Miklosh Pani. Minister Panyi, thank you so

1:58.0

much for taking time to speak with me. I'm particularly keen to speak with you because you are spokesperson of one of your many jobs, I think, is on pro-natalist policies here in Hungary.
