The date is December 2nd 1978 and I thank you for that.

Believe me, today's the day, I don't care if I've been so over 50 years, I don't ever want

to forget that today is the day.

Now this is a typical AA deal, I drank for 22 years, I've been blessed with sobriety because

of people like you and this wonderful program for a little over 25 years, that's a total

of 47 years for anybody who's counting.

And I finally get to speak at a conference of AA and they give me three minutes.

And no chair.

So that's typical AA, right?

Okay, so let me try to tell you in three minutes what happened to me.

22 years of drinking, nine automobile accidents, five of them total jail, nut house, shock treatment,

ruin marriage, screwed up career, several unhappy girlfriends, the whole nine yards and a very

unhappy employer and a wife who wanted a divorce, that was the first 22 years of the fun

and games.

And I still thought it was a social drinker, absolutely believed that was a social drinker.

I mean, that only had been arrested for driving while intoxicated twice, so it's not much

of a problem.
