On today's show, a pandemic reality check. Short Wave's Maddie Sofia and Emily Kwong talk about how we got here and how we should all be thinking about the holidays and the coming winter.

0:10.3	So I know we've all been paying more attention to the election these last few days,
0:15.3	but the pandemic is still raging.
0:18.2	Hospitals in Wisconsin are at 87% capacity.
0:22.8	Wisconsin hospitals have more COVID-19 patients than ever,
0:26.5	and their sphere, the healthcare system will be overwhelmed.
0:29.7	An official with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Health System,
0:32.7	total local news station that staffing is the big issue.
0:36.7	They might have to start reaching out to recent ICU retirees for help.
0:42.2	So now, you know, our COVID unit that has three wings,
0:45.1	we were using one, we're now using all three of them.
0:48.4	We've exceeded the capacity in our COVID-19.
0:50.6	The situation isn't much better in El Paso, Texas.
0:54.2	At the University Medical Center there a month ago,
0:57.2	there were a couple dozen patients with COVID-19.
1:00.5	As of last week, this hospital broke another record of daily COVID patients here,
1:05.4	more than 200.
1:06.9	They've set up isolation tents outside the hospital,
1:09.7	more beds at the local convention center.
1:12.1	There's even an overnight curfew tonight.
