She's in a seaside town called Lady Smith on Vancouver Island in Canada.

She can feel the ocean breeze tickling across her tiny body

and the smell of sultan brine mixes with the scent of the peonies in her hands.

Everything feels so peaceful out here.

It's nothing like what's happening back inside the house.

Pam can hear her parents yelling at each other through the thin mesh of the screen door.

The jarring sounds pierce her little cocoon of safety.

She clunches her fingers tight around the flowers. She's already

a veteran in the war of her parents' marriage. Sometimes they're like a flashfire, intense

but over as quickly as they start. But sometimes they go right

from arguing to kissing like nothing ever happened in the first place. It's confusing for Pamela

to understand, but it's better than the screaming.
