Luke 19: 28-40- 'Blessings on him who comes in the name of the Lord.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 559-560 (in 'Jesus' messianic entrance into Jerusalem')- How will Jerusalem welcome her Messiah? Although Jesus had always refused popular attempts to make him king, he chooses the time and prepares the details for his messianic entry into the city of "his father David". Acclaimed as son of David, as the one who brings salvation (Hosanna means "Save!" or "Give      salvation!"), the "King of glory" enters his City "riding on an ass". Jesus conquers the Daughter of Zion, a figure of his Church, neither by ruse nor by violence, but by the humility that bears witness to the truth. and so the subjects of his kingdom on that day are children and God's poor, who acclaim him as had the angels when they announced him to the shepherds. Their acclamation, "Blessed be he who comes in the name of the Lord", is taken up by the Church in the Sanctus of the Eucharistic liturgy that introduces the memorial of the Lord's Passover.

Jesus' entry into Jerusalem manifested the coming of the kingdom that the King-Messiah was going to accomplish by the Passover of his Death and Resurrection. It is with the celebration of that entry on Palm Sunday that the Church's liturgy solemnly opens Holy Week.

0:22.0

We're looking at the literal sense of the text.

What was the original author trying to convey by using certain words?

0:29.6

And how would the original audience have understood these words?

0:32.8

And as always, when we're doing this, we want to make sure that we're faithful to the teaching of the church.

0:43.3

So today, when you go to Mass for Palm Sunday, you'll actually hear two different gospel readings. So there's one that's read as part of the entrance procession when the priest comes into the church.

0:48.3

There's a special reading.

0:50.3

And then there's a second reading at the normal time in the Mass, and that's the longer reading.

0:55.1

So what we're going to focus on today is the shorter reading, which is read as part of the procession at the start of Mass.

1:01.1

So we're looking at the Palm Sunday procession reading, which actually talks about Jesus' own Palm Sunday procession.

1:07.8

If you want to hear an exegesis of that longer gospel reading, and it is quite a long one,

1:11.8

because it goes through basically all of Jesus' passion, you can hear that as bonus episodes of

1:17.4

the podcast, and you can get access to that through the episode description. Have a look at the

Patreon page there and see if that might interest you. So we're looking at Luke chapter 19 verses 28 to 40.

1:46.0

where on entering you will find a cult tied on which no one has ever yet sat, untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you,

1:54.0

why are you untying it? You shall say this, the Lord has need of it. So those who were sent went away and found it as he had told them.

2:03.8

And as they were untying the cult, its owners said to them, why are you untying the cult?

2:09.6

And they said, the Lord has need of it. And they brought it to Jesus. And throwing their garments

on the cult, they set Jesus upon it.
