Yep, it's the season when these ice cream cart bells ring out in Chicago sidewalks, parks, and beaches.

the Mexican popsicles known as Palaitas. So reporter Catalina Maria Johnson spent some time

with a Palatero named Victor Cruz, although he was affectionately known

as Don Victor. Catalina even accompanied him on one of his regular routes. Recently, she learned

that Don Victor passed away from COVID. His daughter, Erica Mahoney, would often meet up with her dad

at a festival or some event at the park while he was

selling his frozen treats. She remembers how much he loved his work.

My dad was really easygoing. He was really cool.

And she said her dad had a desire to provide the best possible customer service to his clients.

Like, he'd always make sure to give people extra napkins, she says.

I remember him saying, you have to give clients the very best, and he'd give out like 20 napkins.

And being a Palatero made Don Victor a very popular grandpa.

He would push his cart to his grandchild summer camp every day and give him a free paleta.
