For our recap of the week, including the new Russiagate conspiracy that Epstein was a Russian agent, subscribe to watch our Friday Free-For-All: Jeff Epstein, the Russian Spy.

As the Trump administration turns the world into chaos, threatening to bomb Iran, killing Americans in Minnesota, kidnapping presidents in Venezuela, and gutting the nation’s already-terrible healthcare system, Israel’s genocide in Gaza has fallen out of the corporate news cycle.

Our guest, Palestinian-American law student Ahmad Ibsais, joins Useful Idiots to explain that the reports from Gaza weren’t just pushed aside to get more views from higher-performing news stories, but intentionally buried for a much more pointed and, as always, nefarious reason.

Useful Idiots: Why have we stopped seeing of coverage of Gaza in Western media?
Ahmad Ibsais: Right before the ceasefire was a time where we saw so much public outrage that a genocide was taking place. And it wasn’t because Palestinian voices suddenly became credible in any way. It’s because the extremity of Israeli violence reached the Western consciousness in a way it could process.
There were so many news stories about children starving to death, and people could conditionally recognize that Palestinians were dying in a way that was not their fault. And that’s where the ceasefire came.
So now, any violation of the ceasefire or coverage of it, brings into question the fallacy that America was able to broker it. Like is America even a superpower anymore? Does the Israeli state even care what America says or does?
Second, let’s keep up this illusion that America is not contributing to the genocide or that they’re in any way complicit. Coverage raises the question: Palestinians are still dying, so what are we doing and how are we enabling this?
That’s why we don’t see it anymore. And they’ll wait, as they have done in the past, until Palestinians respond in a meaningful way. And that’s when the ceasefire ‘breaks.’

We also bring you a bonus interview this week, and I speak to Ahmad Ibsayy, who is a first-generation

0:11.2

Palestinian-American law student, poet, and scholar, who writes the newsletter State of Siege.

0:17.8

His writing appears in places like The Guardian, Mandanda Weiss, Al Jazeera, and the

0:21.0

nation. And I talked to Ahmad about what is going on in Palestine right now, things that are

0:26.7

being ignored by the media that we really need to make sure that we are paying attention to.

0:33.3

Welcome and thank you so much for joining. Yeah, thank you for having me. The news in Palestine has been eclipsed by very big stories, ranging from what's happening

0:43.5

in Iran, Venezuela, obviously the Epstein Files, and Minneapolis.

0:49.8

So wanted to ask you what you think it's important for people to be aware of that is happening right

0:54.6

now in Palestine and Gaza and West Bank as we speak. Yeah, I think we can start off with a fact

1:00.0

because that gets straight to the heart of people. Almost 100 people have died in the last five

1:05.0

days of a supposed ceasefire, right? And there's a common phrase that a lot of Palestinians say, Israel never sees us to fire, right? And that's what we've continued to see since October 2025. And the last time Israel brokered a fake ceasefire that was violated in March of 2025 during the first nights of Ramadan. And the UN documented over 20 attacks that only killed women and children.

1:31.3

So it's a pattern that we have seen played out both through the current genocide and, you know, from the start of the Nekba.

1:37.3

The first like ceasefires that were brokered in the early days of like UN intervention and then into the 70s and 80s,

1:43.3

and when, you know when

1:44.7

Israel was attacking Palestinians in Egypt and Lebanon. These were all ceasefires that Israel violated

1:50.1

and the media's jumping point is always when Palestinians respond to the degradation of the

1:55.8

rights and their life. And I think that's like the basic premise of where we can start about

1:59.8

what ceasefire means in the Palestinian context.

2:03.6

You wrote a piece at Mondo Weiss from Palestine to Minneapolis.

2:06.6

ICE and Israel used the same violent playbook. Can you elaborate on this?

2:10.8

I would probably clarify. There's a slight difference because in the case of Palestine,

2:16.6

the Israeli state, you know, since its inception, has one ignored the existence of the Palestinian people, right?
