Hi, this is Meredith Foster.

Chad Matson is best known as the lead singer of the band Unspoken.

For nearly 20 years, making music's been a big part of Chad's life,

touring the country, loads of hit songs like reason, call it grace, start a fire. But before he ever set foot on a stage or even realized that music was going to be a part of his life,

Chad was living under the weight of contradiction. He knew God was real. He'd felt his presence,

and yet his life was driven by addiction, from cigarettes to alcohol to drugs, to living in drug

houses. His addictions grew stronger and he moved further and further away from the life

God wanted for him. What started out as fun, gradually took control of his life, and he spent

every day chasing the next fix. What kind of a kid were you? I was, I would say a good-hearted kid.

I've always had kind of a tender heart and always loved, you know, the least of these, like,

whatever they were in my community, like didn't.

I mean, of course, I had friends that were normal, but I also had a lot of friends that

weren't normal.
