And Lorraine asked specifically, she says,

does progesterone therapy prevent spontaneous abortions?

I'm in my OBGYN rotation and my preceptor gives this to patients

with repeated pregnancy losses.

But I've also read that it doesn't do anything.

So a little bit of background.

Progesterone is pretty much vital for a healthy pregnancy. Without progestron, a pregnancy will not continue.

And typically the corpus ludium is going to produce the progestrone up until about nine weeks gestation.

After about nine weeks, nine or ten weeks, the

placenta will actually start to produce progesterones. So the levels early in

the pregnancy should be high enough so that the pregnancy can continue.
