I'm Luke Vargas for the Wall Street Journal and this is What's News Sunday, the show where we tackle the big questions about the biggest stories in the news and reach out to our colleagues across the newsroom to help explain what's happening in our world.

And this week, we'll look at the economic waves being caused by a new class of drugs helping people

to lose weight from the obvious boost they're giving drug companies to the threat they could pose to

restaurants and snack makers and less certain but no less profound ways they could shake up

far-flung corners of the economy from fashion to air travel.

Let's dive in.

In the span of just a few years, the business of weight loss has been turned upside down

by the advent of GLP1 drugs originally developed to treat

type 2 diabetes. And the odds are you may know about them firsthand or from a friend or loved

one.

Because according to a recent poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation,

one in eight American adults have now taken a GLP1 drug,

and around one in three adults say they've heard a lot about them.

But one thing we realized we knew less about was how these drugs were changing the economy

and forcing businesses across the corporate landscape to rethink how they could be affected as prescription numbers keep on going up.
