I'm Mick Garris and this is post-mortem. The world can be a scary place and the world of horror can be a refuge

from fear. It can be a therapeutic domicile to help us deal with our wounds, our fragility, our fractious lives.

We have all known tragedy, some more than others, and we deal with them in different ways.

If you are an artist, a painter, a writer, a musician, a filmmaker, tragedy can bring depth to your work,

can help you draw something wonderful out of something painful and terrible.

As a filmmaker in the dark genre, the personal losses of my family members led me into deeper, more emotional explorations of fear and death.

Writing the bullet was the direct result of losing my younger brother a few years before.

I've lost two brothers and a sister over the years as well as both parents and close friends

and associates.

The horror genre is one that allows us to dig deep into the taboo subjects of death and terror.

I would like to think that the emotional experiences I've gone through have fed and enriched the work that I do. And I'm certainly not the only

one. David Cronenberg was suffering through a very painful dissolution of a marriage that led to

his brilliantly bitter and horrific movie The Brood.

His mother's cancer fed the agonizing deterioration of Seth Brundle from man to monster in the fly.

We've all experienced pain and loss and we all deal with them in various ways.

As creators it can deepen us if we allow it to.

Storytelling is a sharing experience and the veracity of a true step into the pool of darkness can help us share what we fear, what hurts us, and help us to cope.

Yeah, it hurts. It hurts a lot, but it makes us deeper, better, more emotionally rich artists and human beings.
