Summary

Why do some of us feel the overwhelming urge to say yes, smooth things over, and keep everyone around us happy—even at our own expense? And why does it sometimes feel... kind of manipulative? Is people pleasing just kindness in overdrive, or is there something deeper (or even darker) at work? Host Amanda Montell (@amanda_montell) invites author, former therapist, and self-proclaimed sociopath Patric Gagne (@patricgagne) to untangle the messy knot of motives behind people pleasing. With the help of listener-submitted thought spirals, they explore the fine line between compassion and control, the traumas that might fuel this behavior, and how to rid your life of "pathological over-accommodation" once and for all.     Further Reading: Sociopath: A Memoir by Patric Gagne  - Join the "Magical Overthinkers Club" by following the pod on Instagram @magicaloverthinkers. - To access early, ad-free episodes and more, subscribe to the Magical Overthinkers Substack. - Pick up a hard copy of Amanda's book The Age of Magical Overthinking: Notes on Modern Irrationality, or listen to the audiobook. Welcome to the magical overthinkers podcast, a show for thought spiralers, exploring the subjects we can't stop overthinking about, from imposter syndrome to crushes.

If you can relate to the feeling that despite living in the information age, life only seems to be

0:23.0

making less and less sense, if you can connect to the idea that for some mysterious reason,

0:29.6

it just feels especially hard to exist as a human in the world right now, then you're in the right

0:35.6

place. This podcast is here for ruminators, for dreamers,

0:40.8

for people who live in their heads. It's here to help us think less about the things that don't

0:45.7

matter and more about the things that do. I'm your host, Amanda Montel. Today, we're overthinking

0:52.9

about people-pleasing.

0:58.8

So a while back, I saw an Instagram therapist post something about people-pleasing behavior

1:05.2

that really got under my skin. The post made this claim that people pleasing is unconscious manipulation that stems from

1:14.2

a childhood fear of abandonment or conflict of some kind. And as I understand it, this sentiment really

1:21.7

proliferated and it's turned into one of these absolutist social media mental health axioms that is spread far and wide because it's engaging, but might not exactly be true for everyone.

1:34.9

And that's why I took issue with it. First off, not all people pleasing is unconscious.

1:41.0

Plenty of people know that they do it and wish they could stop. A lot of those people

1:45.2

submitted thought spirals for today's episode. But then also I got to thinking if that statement

1:49.9

is true, doesn't that then suggest that any behavior that considers someone else's reaction

1:56.1

and wants it to be positive is potential manipulation? Or jokes manipulation? Or compliments manipulation?

2:04.3

Still, I also do definitely recognize that some of the intermittent people-pleasing tendencies

2:09.9

that I've exhibited throughout my life have at times prevented me from leading the most

2:15.9

fully present and authentic and thus enjoyable life that I could.

2:20.2

Before I conducted the interview for this episode, which you're about to hear, I think I was a little

2:25.0

bit confused or at least had a muddy conception of what people pleasing even really meant.
