Summary

Chronically stressed? Emotionally exhausted? Depleted to the point of physical suffering, dissociation, and paranoia that things will never improve?? Welcome to today's woefully relatable topic, burnout, which is not just fatigue or boredom but rather what happens when our bodies fail to complete the "stress response cycle." That's according to our brilliant and delightful guest, Amelia Nagoksi, co-author of the bestselling book Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle. With wisdom and charisma, Amelia joins host Amanda (@amanda_montell) to soothe our thought spirals about how American capitalist society is fundamentally clashing with the human spirit... and what we can do to quell burnout's negative effects.  - Join the "Magical Overthinkers Club" by following the pod on Instagram @magicaloverthinkers. - To access early, ad-free episodes and more, subscribe to the Magical Overthinkers Substack. - Pick up a hard copy of Amanda's book The Age of Magical Overthinking, or listen to the audiobook. - Sources:  Burnout: The secret to unlocking the stress cycle - bit.ly/4czkdoO You might be part of 'The Great Exhaustion' - bit.ly/3AAbghF It’s not a contest: Bragging about your work stress - bit.ly/3AAbmpx Cold-Water Immersion Facilitates Positive Affect - bit.ly/46Wmd9i To watch the podcast on YouTube: https://bit.ly/MagicalOverthinkersYouTube ; Don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast for free wherever you're listening If you like the show, telling a friend about it would be amazing! Hey listeners, this is your host Amanda. Before we get into today's episode, I have a very exciting

0:05.2

announcement. I am going back on tour this summer. If you live in Chicago, Minneapolis, or Seattle,

0:11.6

I would love if you would catch me on book tour for the age of magical overthinking. My Chicago event is on

0:17.5

July 12th, Minnie is on July 13th, and Seattle is on July 29th. These events are so much

0:24.7

fun. This is not your typical book tour. The Chicago and Minneapolis events are something

0:30.7

called the big magical cult show, this ridiculous variety show involving drag burlesque performances,

0:40.4

merch, custom drinks, a PowerPoint presentation about parasycial relationships, of course books, book signing, meet and greet, the whole nine.

0:46.2

Seattle is going to be really, really fun too. And I so hope to see you there. Information and tickets

0:51.4

are at the link in our show notes or at Amanda Montel.com slash events.

Welcome to the magical overthinkers podcast, a show for thought spirulers, exploring the subjects

1:05.9

we can't stop overthinking about, from imposter syndrome to nostalgia. If you can relate to the feeling

1:12.4

that despite living in the information age, the world only seems to be making less sense,

1:18.0

if you can connect to the idea that for some mysterious reason, it just feels especially hard

1:23.3

to exist as a human in the world right now, then you're in the right place. This podcast is here

1:28.7

to take down the temperature on this especially mentally overwhelming time in history, to help us think

1:35.2

less about the things that don't matter and more about the things that do. I'm your host, Amanda Montpel.

1:41.2

Today, we're overthinking about burnout. I don't know about you, but until a

1:50.4

couple of years ago, I had the impression that feeling burnt out just meant being really,

1:55.7

really tired. I pictured the image of the flicker of a candle being snuffed out. Burnout just meant you needed a really

2:02.4

long nap. I thought the meaning of the word was how it sounded. You were just spent like a fire in the

2:08.7

fireplace that nobody tended to. And I thought, well, if being burnt out is just feeling tired,

2:13.6

then I must not be burnt out because I don't feel tired. I feel wired.
