Summary
In this episode, we'll hear stories about sewing projects gone awry, and how failures can become opportunities.
Marjorie thought she had ruined the dress she was sewing to wear to her son's wedding when she burned a hole in it. After literally throwing the dress in the trash, she decided to turn the flaw into a feature and added hand embellishment to cover the burn.
Tiffanie wanted to give up on a ruffled dress for a student showcase, but when she finally finished the dress, she felt proud of how she executed her vision. Tiffanie says the when you are frustrated, take a break from the project to get some perspective.
Munirah was frustrated when a bra project just didn't fit the way she wanted it to. She was ready to just move on to the next project, but after an epiphany one night, she was able to salvage the project.
Maressa was ready to give up on a knitting project after repeatedly ripping out a sleeve she could get quite right. After deciding to pivot and make the sweater sleeveless, she created one of her most loved and worn knitting projects of all time.
Don't forget to share your stories with us! Next month (September 2020), we're looking for stories about unexpected connections made through sewing. You can share your story at http://www.seamwork.com/go/answer.

| 0:00.0 | I'm Sarah Mittnick and this is Seamwork Radio, where we tell stories about the surprising ways that sewing impacts our lives. |
| 0:19.0 | Hi everybody and welcome to the very first mini episode of Seamwork Radio. |
| 0:24.5 | We're going to be talking to makers like you in these little mini episodes about how the practice |
| 0:30.0 | of sewing has helped them to slow down, get to know their bodies, discover who they are, |
| 0:35.5 | and connect to the people around them. So you'll be able to |
| 0:38.8 | tune in here every month for these little mini episodes, kind of mid-month, and we'll share |
| 0:43.4 | stories from our community of people who care about sewing and creating, just like you do. |
| 0:49.5 | So I'm Sari, and I'm the founder of Seamwork. And I'm Haley. I'm the pattern designer here at Seamwork and I'm |
| 0:56.7 | excited to be hosting along here with Sari. So every month what we're going to do is just share stories |
| 1:03.9 | around our theme for the month. So our theme for this month is creative grit. So what is this idea of creative grit? You might be |
| 1:14.0 | familiar with the idea of grit being our tolerance to failure. And creative grit is just the |
| 1:20.0 | tolerance that we have for failure when we're specifically engaged in these creative pursuits. |
| 1:26.2 | So it really comes from this ability to be gentle with |
| 1:31.4 | yourself and at the same time optimistic about the future. And that really helps you push through |
| 1:36.9 | all kinds of creative challenges. So for example, when you are maybe sewing and you have to rip out |
| 1:43.6 | your zipper five times in a row, it can be so |
| 1:46.1 | easy to just kind of spiral on that and to think of that as a failure and a reflection of |
| 1:52.2 | your abilities rather than an opportunity to learn and to grow. So that kind of optimism is just |
| 1:59.8 | something that you have to practice, just like putting in a zipper |
| 2:02.7 | or something you have to practice. And that's what kind of sustains your creativity over the long |
| 2:08.2 | haul. So this theme was inspired by an article I wrote a while back called How to Develop Creative |
| 2:14.0 | Grit. And if you want to read that, it's an issue 45 of seamwork. And I share |
