Barbara Orchard had been working as a maid at Caracowl for just over three years by November 1952.

The impressive 12-bedroom property enclosed with high walls was built 25 years earlier on the coastal cliffs at Porth Pene in St Hostel Bay, Cornwall.

Barbara had half the day off on Friday, November 7th, so she spent time with her fiancée John.

When she returned to Caracal just after 10 o'clock that night, it was quiet, and despite the lights being on throughout the home,

Barbara did not see her employer's Mr. and Mrs. Gifford.

She went to the kitchen at the back of the house to do some chores.

There she noticed what appeared to be blood stains on the floor and the cooker.

Worried that something had happened while she was away,

Barbara called two local hospitals asking for Mr and Mrs Gifford,

but the hospital staff hadn't admitted anyone by that name.

Not knowing what to do, Barbara went to her room.

She was unsettled and unable to sleep because she feared something awful had happened.

At first light around six o'clock, she walked one mile to her fianc's home in Penrise.

John journeyed to Caracal with Barbara to figure out what was going on.
