And today we're going to talk about a really interesting moment in gay history.

As regular listeners may remember, I spent much of August camping with my fellow queers, first at a radical fairy gathering in Vermont, and then at the honcho campout queer electronic

music festival out in western Pennsylvania. At the latter event, I heard a talk co-presented by

Ben Miller called Back to

Who's Land, Utopia, Primitivism, and Gays in the Woods, and I immediately wanted to bring Ben

on the pod. Ben Miller is a writer and historian living in Berlin. If you've been listening for a while,

you might recall that I've recommended his excellent podcast, Bad Gays, about evil and complicated

queers in history as a gay

agenda item. Ben's work, which also makes up his recently completed dissertation, is on the

fascinating and troubled history of gay men looking to both nature and indigenous peoples as a means

of forming a certain kind of anti-assimulationist or countercultural identity. Both of my August jaunts, especially the radical

fairy gathering, come out of this tradition in one way or another, but I also realize not everyone

is aware of them, or they're very complicated histories and how we got them in the first place.
