Summary

The National Health Service is the largest and the oldest single payer healthcare system in the world. It is the largest public employer in England and Scotland with around 1.5 million staff and is constantly in the political spotlight. As it reaches its 70th birthday we explore how it is viewed by those who work within it but trained in another country. Doctors, nurses and administrators give the listeners their view of the unique organisation that is the NHS.

0:29.0	by the arrival of doctors from India and Pakistan.
0:33.0	Traveling to deprived areas across the UK,
0:36.0	they worked hard to gain respect for their skills.
0:39.0	Hot on the heels of those medical pioneers
0:42.0	was another doctor from India, Anita Sharma, who headed for
0:46.1	the northwest of England in the late 1970s, always thinking she'd return to her home country.
0:53.0	I was born in Delhi, India, did my schooling there,
0:57.0	and I did my MD in Oppsengai.
1:01.0	Oppsengaiini was the one speciality which I felt.
1:05.2	I was really, really so passionate about and I felt I could make some changes
1:09.9	improving the health of women. And why medicine?
1:14.0	We are a family where there is no one a doctor.
1:18.0	So my mom always felt if there was a doctor in the house,
1:22.0	things would be much easier.
1:23.8	I loved chemistry, but then a little bit of push and pull factor from my parents.
1:30.0	So I was asked to go into medicine.
1:33.0	I hated the year one.
