Summary

When the town of Holcomb, Kansas opened its doors to renowned author Truman Capote in 1959, they had no idea their story would change the way True Crime was written forever. Join Chris and Lizzie as they explore the real case behind the novel ‘In Cold Blood’ and its 1967 film adaptation, plus find out where Capote may have twisted the truth, and the shocking lengths film director Richard Brooks took to recreate the murders of the Clutter Family.

The Hello and welcome back to What Went Wrong, your favorite podcast, full stop that just so happens to be about movies and how it's nearly impossible to make them, let alone a good one, let alone maybe one of the most realistic true crime films ever made.

0:39.2

We are talking about in Cold Blood today, both Truman Capote's groundbreaking 1965 novel and the

0:44.4

1967 film of the same name. And we're doing this because we're covering Breakfast at Tiffany's on

0:50.1

Monday, which was, of course, based on the novella of the same name by Truman Capote.

0:54.8

Now, since we're covering that film, which, as we'll discuss, was an extremely unfaithful

0:58.8

adaptation of Capote's work, I thought it would only be fair to give his most famous work

1:03.2

in Cold Blood its own episode, especially since the film is a very faithful adaptation,

1:07.8

perhaps in some ways more faithful even than Capote's own account of the

1:11.5

clutter family murders. And it goes to some pretty extreme lengths in pursuit of its realism.

1:16.3

Now, this is an episode in our out-of-frame series where we focus a little more on what happens

1:20.1

just out of frame off the movie sets and in real life than we do in our main feed episodes.

1:24.5

And in this case, that means that we will be discussing the murders of the Clutter family on which In Cold Blood is based. And there is some explicit detail, so please

1:32.6

be warned. If you're not someone who wants to hear about that, you may want to exit here.

1:36.7

All right, I'm here, as always, with Chris Winterbauer. And Chris, what was your experience with

1:40.5

In Cold Blood, both the book and the movie before today?

1:43.9

I thought I had seen this.

1:46.3

Me too.

1:47.1

And maybe I had seen portions of it.

1:49.8

I don't think I'd ever sat and watched the whole thing all the way through.

1:54.1

So I will just say it felt like a fresh first time viewing.

1:59.8

And this movie is, at least from a technical perspective, absolutely phenomenal.
