Summary

Fresh off the plane, in today’s episode Alex and Mimi chat about their observations, having just spent 3 weeks in North America. What are the main differences between North America Vs. Europe.

“Americans take ice cream soooo seriously, how do you even choose?” - Mimi Ikonn - 22:00

The USA is the land of plenty, everything is BIGGER! There is more of EVERYTHING. From credit cards to what’s on your plate, either in a restaurant or baked at home in a tiny oven.

Alex chats about a friend who moved from London to California, just so his Billion Dollar dream could be recognised. Meanwhile, Mimi gets chatted up in the supermarket over what breakfast cereal does she like.

“The cities in Europe are designed in a way to get you walking, to move, to be active and mindful”

- Alex Ikonn - 18:47

Having travelled to many places and lived on both sides of the Atlantic, Mimi and Alex have great insight into just how different the 2 cultures can be. Here’s what they get into;

  • How people spend their money, which culture has the most consumer driven society?
  • Do you have a billionaire mindset or are you being conservative with your cash?
  • Where do Alex and Mimi get approached the most?
  • Who speaks the loudest, who is most respectful?
  • Public transport Vs owning a car.
  • Food portions, even a salad in the US is enough to feed an entire family.
  • What’s in your kitchen? We want some Patatas Bravas! Yum!
  • How to notice disruptive industries when you realise something is missing in a culture?
  • The empowerment of youth through social media.

We didn’t want this episode to be political so please, don’t take offence if you live in one of these countries. We haven’t meant to choose a favourite here, since we love both - EQUALLY! These are just some generalised observations from spending a lot of time in both places.

“I like to find differences, it gives color to life, as long as people live in peace and harmony” Mimi Ikonn - 33:30

Actually, we know there’s something for everyone in both places, but it’s not until you explore the world that you really see for yourself where YOU fit in. We really encourage you to travel and see the world for yourself, maybe your expectations and realisations will be completely different to ours but you only know if you go find out. Explore - with love and an open heart!

Hello and welcome to the icons podcast. I am very excited to have a very different episode

0:08.4

for you today. We just decided, no, why not just chat about things that we just chat about.

0:13.4

So we recently came back from our almost three week trip to mostly where in Los Angeles,

0:18.8

California, and we're for a few days, we were in Toronto. Mimi and I were just thinking

0:23.8

as we were on this trip, when we came back, because we've lived in Europe now for, you

0:28.4

know, six years, almost six years. However, you know, for my whole life pretty much, I consider myself

0:34.7

growing up in North America, I'm from Toronto, Canada, that's kind of where I grew up, and most of my

0:39.1

memory comes from there. I think it's very interesting to be able to live in different cultures and

0:45.4

places in the world and be able to just observe. So we thought, why not just chat about the differences

0:50.8

that we see in regards to maybe European and North American cultures? Yeah, I think it's going to be a

0:57.2

fun chat because like you said, we have both perspectives. I've lived personally in Canada for 11

1:02.7

years now here in the UK for six years. And although it's questionable whether UK is part of Europe,

1:09.2

we have traveled enough in Europe and we have traveled enough in US to have noticed the differences.

1:14.8

And you actually mentioned to me, you're like, oh my god, there's so many differences actually.

1:19.1

Like every time we go back and forth, we are able to observe that. And we wanted to just chat the

1:23.7

two of us. And then Alex just mentioned like, why don't we just record it? It would be fun. I think

1:27.9

before we start chatting about this, one thing I really want to mention to you guys listening,

1:32.6

whether you're from Europe, whether you're from US, it doesn't really matter. This conversation is not

1:37.8

to say that Europe is better than US or US is better than Europe or that one is in any way more

1:45.2

superior. This is not a political conversation. This is just a more fun observations from us. And

1:51.6

personally, I would say I love both places. I mean, I love the world as you guys. If you follow me or

1:56.4

do you know this, I feel like I'm a citizen of the world. And I always feel home wherever I go.
