I'm Northern Kentucky University political scientist Michael Baranowski.

My guest today is Leah Downey, a junior research fellow at St. John's

College, Cambridge, and the author of Our Money, Monetary Policy as if Democracy Matters, which we'll be

discussing today. Leah Downey, welcome to the show. Hi, thanks for having me. So I wanted to start

at maybe sort of a higher level, just to make sure listeners and everyone's

on the same page because sometimes folks aren't necessarily all that familiar with monetary

or even fiscal policy for that matter.

So can you just start by giving us a sense of the differences between monetary and fiscal policy, including who conduct switch?

Yeah, great question. So I'd say that a sort of party line on this, the typical view,

is that we usually think of fiscal policy as the sort of political branch of macroeconomic policy.

So it's taxed and spent, right?

It's usually done by the legislature,

although there's been some more executive involvement recently.
