Summary

This week, Jake and Bob discuss the current state of therapy and its increasing popularity in society. They explore the factors contributing to the rise of interest in therapy, highlight the importance of philosophy and theology in therapy training, and reflect on the importance of objective truth in the healing process.

Key Points:

  • Therapy has become increasingly popular in society, with more people seeking it out and discussing it openly.
  • The breakdown of trust in various institutions, including the church, has contributed to the rise in therapy as a means of finding support and guidance.
  • A solid foundation in philosophy, anthropology, and theology is essential in therapy training to provide a proper understanding of the human person and their needs.
  • Subjective experiences without objective truth and care can be dangerous, and therapy should aim to integrate both subjective and objective realities.
  • Resilience and the ability to repair are part of human nature and therefore are important aspects of therapy and personal growth.
  • The sacraments provide structure and guidance in relationships and can contribute to healing and growth.
  • Therapy should be situated within the context of faith and community, and not isolated from them.
  • Discernment is crucial when considering a career in therapy, and motivations should be rooted in a genuine call rather than popularity or personal dysfunction.
  • Healthy Christian communities have the potential to provide healing and support, and may reduce the need for therapy.
  • Jesus should be the centerpiece of the healing journey.

We are continuing on in this series on, I guess, therapy, I'm not even sure what we're going to call it, but last episode we talked about our journey in therapy and then leaving therapy and we kind of set up this dynamic where we realized and wanted to,

I think, start a conversation, continue a conversation, be in the conversation around therapy currently as it is.

And so let if I could set it up and then we can go with it.

1:21.3

I don't know about you, but several things have caught my attention.

1:26.0

Number one, I have had more people ask me

1:30.6

about my journey of becoming a therapist in maybe the past year or two than I ever have before.

1:38.6

It feels like this spike in interest amongst young people and not young people,

should I become a therapist,

1:48.0

should that be my profession, like a lot, a lot of people.

dynamic I'm noticing, and this is like pervasive across the culture,

everybody's talking about therapy.
