Summary

We always say that the last layer is everything and we do everything from plan conception all the way down to the last bit of styling, and even though it’s all important and critical to a beautiful space, this is the cherry on top, or the soul of the house. This is one of those things that people either have or don’t and it’s really hard to just own your own styling, so you go find inspiration. We get a lot of questions on styling in general, just on how you do it and how one styles because it’s something they teach you in school at all. This is often what separates the good from the great where the good designer might design well, but not style so well, but the great stylists will design and style well. Styling can be hard to grasp 5:19Edit 10:42Blank spaces and when to use them 16:04Focal points 20:44Shelf styling 32:40“When we’re trying to put things together that are gonna go on a shelf, if those things look great together, even on the floor, or when we’re pulling things from the show room, we’ll usually load everything onto this console in the design center conference room, if they look great together, they’re gonna look great together on a shelf. No matter where you put them, they're gonna look great in a room.” 14:57-https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/-https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/-https://alicelanehome.com/-https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome-https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/-https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity-News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5

Hello everyone, welcome to Dear Alice. Today we're talking about our 10 principles of styling.

0:28.0

I'm so excited. I always say that like that last layer is everything and we do everything from like plan conception all the way down to the last bit of styling.

0:38.0

And there's even though it's all important, it's all critical to a beautiful space. Like this is like the cherry on top. Like it is like it's, anyway, it's everything. It's the soul of the house. So I'm jazz to talk about this. I think we get, I think this is one of those things that people either have it or you don't.

0:56.0

Like it's really hard to just like own your own styling, you know, so you find inspiration. But I think we get a lot of questions on styling in general. Just like, how do you do it?

1:06.0

How does one learn how to style? Because it's not something they teach you in school at all.

1:11.0

I also think it separates like the good from the great like designers in my opinion. When I'm seeing things on Instagram, I'm like, that's designed well. Maybe not styled the best though.

1:23.0

And you know, things that I've photos and spaces that I've seen like you guys do and other people at Alice Lane and, you know, some other people in the scrum, I'm like, wow, that really takes it to like the next level in my opinion.

1:38.0

Like it felt, it feels like thoughtful and I don't know, just warmer. Yeah, it just I agree with you that it is a feeling.

1:49.0

Because I'll walk into certain showrooms at market and I'm like, I can tell around fury style this space and it's just got this effortless cool thing.

1:59.0

And lately, all of the like our publishing editor has been saying to us, okay, when you style this, it's probably going to go in elder core Spain or it's going to go in, you know, this magazine in the UK or maybe it's house beautiful in the US.

2:14.0

She'll say, make sure it's not too glam. Magazines do not want glam. And to me, glam means it's over styled, over polished, really sparkly.

2:26.0

I don't know.

2:27.0

It's a gallery and it's just it's too perfect gallery and I think that there's this effortless and it like you talked about Ron Fury and how effortless his styling is.

2:35.0

And it just feels like it's like it's been lived in it's that cup has been set down there that book has been read. Yeah, you're not putting anything on top of it because you want to open it again.

2:43.0

Totally, you know, so it's it's just it's livable. It's relaxed and I think that is where what people want. And it's I would hope that I mean it's it's I was going to say when you're styling a house like for a photo shoot, it's a little hard to do.

2:59.0

It's harder to do to make it look so effortless. So it is an art is an absolute art and you play with it and you tinker with it to make it look like you didn't try at all.

3:09.0

Yeah, you know, yeah.

3:11.0

And sometimes when we're when we're done with the shelf or a surface where we look back at it and we might even take something away because it just looks too contrived.

3:20.0

And we wanted to look more effortless and believable. So then we'll or will knock something off kilter a little and take something away like that.

3:28.0

Actually, that's it. Yeah, that's so coquitional of us to just like take one thing away. Yeah, not what she always said like you get ready and then take one thing away and you're good.

3:36.0

Yeah, totally. I love it. Awesome. Well, I'm just been it. And we've got Sue Hall with us on drums.
