I mean, the weird thing about it is that I think you get so much more emotionally attached to these animals.

The virtual ones?

Yeah.

No, I mean, you really, you know, you feel the emotion of them and you feel the, you know, the drama they're going through.

It's quite remarkable.

One of the cinematographer Caleb Deschannel's first films was the

1979 feature The Black Stallion. Years later, he worked on the 1996 movie about migrating geese,

flyaway home. So he's worked with his share of real animals, but he has found himself overcome by the

virtual creature starring in his upcoming movie Disney's live-action Lion King.

Deschanel, a six-time Oscar nominee, is in the race this year for the German film, Never Look Away.

He looks back at his memorable career as a cinematographer on The Right Stuff, The Natural, The Passion of the Christ, and about two dozen more films.

And he shares his ambivalence about ever doing a movie for Netflix.
