Steve Bannon once called Victor Orban Trump before Trump. Yet on Sunday afternoon, we watched

Orban do something that Trump has never done and never will do. He conceded an election. Look,

there are many similarities between the two men. They're both right-wing authoritarians. They

lead corrupt governments and they're big fans of Vladimir Putin. But while Orban built his power on nationalism, Trump's movement is held together by election

denialism. And that's a big difference. In this episode, I'm going to explain what we can learn

from the opposition movement that toppled the Orban regime. Why organizing, coalition

management and voting really, really matter.

But I'm also going to home in on some key differences

and warn about the risk that we are lulled into complacency

when viewing Trump's attack on free and fair elections

and trying to equate them to what we just saw in Hungary.

The MAGA movement is pretty nativist. I mean, they don't look outside of our

borders and find much to emulate. The one exception to that has been for Victor Orban, the authoritarian

leader of Hungary for the last 16 years. They love his combination of authoritarianism,

his attack on liberal institutions like freedom of speech and freedom of the

press. And they really love the fact that he sticks his finger in the eyes of Europe and NATO

while he cozes up to Vladimir Putin. So it was no surprise that J.D. Vance, the Vice President

of the United States, in between failing to settle world peace in Iran

and pissing off the Vatican, made a trip to try to help Victor Orban in his most recent election.

Well, as we all know, that didn't work out so good. Victor Orban lost that election in a landslide.

And when I say landslide, I mean a landslide. The opposition led by a former Orban lost that election in a landslide. And when I say landslide, I mean a landslide. The opposition,

led by a former Orban aide, Peter Magyar, won two-thirds of all of the seats in the parliament.
