Here's your closing bell brief for Monday, October 20th. I'm Catherine Sullivan for the Wall Street Journal.

U.S. stocks rose today, with major indexes climbing back towards records set earlier in the month.

Investor's sentiment was buoyed by optimism over U.S.-China trade relations and hopes that the government shutdown could end this week.

The Dow, S&P 500, and the NASDAQ were all up over

1%. The three indexes are all less than 0.3% from all-time highs. Global markets also gained,

with Japan's Niki 225 index rising to a new record after the country's ruling party forged

a new coalition. Among individual companies, Cleveland Cliff stock surged

21 and a half percent after the steelmaker reported rising demand and said it would explore

producing rare earth minerals in the U.S. shares in Apple were up 4 percent and hit a new intraday high

following a report that sales of its new iPhone models had started off strongly.

Caring shares jumped 5% after the luxury group struck a deal to sell its House of Creed brand to

L'Oreal. Amazon stock increased almost 2%, even as its Web Services Unit suffered a widespread

outage that hit many companies early today. And Cooper Company's

shares rose 4% after the Wall Street Journal exclusively reported that an activist investor has

taken a stake in the medical device manufacturer and intends to push for strategic changes.
