Summary

In the new episode of Film Stories with Simon Brew, one film that overperformed its box office expectations, and one that didn't. Kevin Costner had won an Oscar for his first directorial outing, but his second - The Postman - had been widely criticised. His third, Open Range, would be a very tricky film to get off the ground. Off the back of Airplane!, comedy team Zucker/Abrahams/Zuckler had less of a struggle to get the glorious Top Secret! made. But the problems came a little further down the road... Stories of both are told in this episode. Find Simon on Twitter at @simonbrew, and the podcast can be found at @filmstoriespod. Support our work at www.patreon.com/simonbrew. Hosted on Acast. I am Simon Brew. As always,

0:55.2

that's absolutely everything you need to know about me. The aim of the podcast, though, well,

0:59.0

I'm here to talk of the stories of film and I talk all sorts. I talk development stories,

1:03.7

production stories, marketing stories, release stories, all the little ingredients that go to make the

1:08.2

films that we know and sometimes love, just that the films that

1:11.4

we know and sometimes love. The films I tend to choose this podcast, they have more of a mainstream

1:16.2

leaning to them than anything else. They're films I'm interested in or invested in to some

1:20.2

degree. And in fact, the two films I pulled together for this particular episode, they're ones

1:25.6

I'm huge fans of, but I just think not enough people

1:28.6

have seen. So let's see if I can do something to convince you if you've not had the pleasure

1:32.3

of either of these to give them a spin. I'll start with the first of the two movies. I'm going to
