Welcome to Pushback. I'm Aaron Mate. It's been two years since the OPCW's cover-up of a Syria

0:10.8

chemical weapons investigation was exposed. This was when leaked documents showed that the

0:16.6

OPCW's own investigators found no evidence of a chemical weapons attack in the Syrian town of

0:23.7

Duma in April 2018. But their findings were censored and the OPCW put out a final report

0:30.8

that erased what these inspectors actually found on the ground and falsely suggested that there

0:37.0

was evidence of a chemical attack in Duma.

0:40.3

So since this has emerged, the OPCW's Director General Fernando Arias has refused all efforts at accountability.

0:48.3

He's refused to meet with the dissenting inspectors and instead has disparaged them in public.

0:53.3

He's refused to explain

0:55.2

the documented manipulation of the OPCW's own reports and their findings. And he's ignored calls

1:04.7

for accountability, refusing to even open up a letter that was recently sent to him by a group

1:10.3

of distinguished signatories,

1:12.6

including five former OPCW officials.

1:15.7

So the latest phase of this came in early June when Arias came before the UN Security Council,

1:22.5

and for the first time he answered questions in open session,

1:27.0

gave the public a chance to hear him respond to

1:29.5

critical questions about the OPCW's handling of the Duma scandal. And this session from Arias,

1:37.6

these answers that he gave were very revealing, amounting to really his most extensive efforts

1:42.8

to date to mislead the public about the OPCW scandal.

1:47.2

So joining me now to discuss this is Pierce Robinson.

1:50.4

He is the co-director of the Organization for Propaganda Studies,

1:54.4

and the convener of the working group on Syria, propaganda, and media,
