| 0:00.0 | This is Bird Note. Driving down a country road in eastern Ontario, there's a |
| 0:07.0 | surprising sight by the roadside. Dozens of vibrantly colored eclectic bird |
| 0:12.4 | houses sitting atop 12 foot poles. Alan Hurst lives nearby and is one of nine |
| 0:18.1 | core volunteers maintaining these bird houses. They're historical, they're |
| 0:22.7 | whimsical, and they're functional. It's called Bird House City and it's in a |
| 0:27.4 | conservation area boasting close to one hundred bird houses with 30 under |
| 0:31.9 | renovation. It started in 1980 with one bird house and the goal was to attract |
| 0:37.9 | purple martens to the area. The initial bird house designs were based on |
| 0:46.3 | nearby historical buildings from the general store to the courthouse. It now |
| 0:51.1 | features a helicopter and a caboose bird house and many more. About a third of |
| 0:56.6 | them are occupied with several species reliably taking up residents. Purple |
| 1:01.7 | martens, rands, bluebirds, chickadees and tree swallows are the most common. The |
| 1:12.4 | operations team brought together 20 to 30 additional volunteers for hands-on |
| 1:16.8 | tasks. These volunteers are really the heart and soul because they're actually |
| 1:20.6 | doing the work. And these bird houses, once you take them down, some may need a |
| 1:24.4 | coat of paint and some varnish. Others need to be completely rebuilt. And Alan |
| 1:29.1 | says community support has kept growing. There is always somebody now walking |
| 1:33.7 | around their multiple groups on weekends, which is great and that wasn't |
| 1:37.0 | happening before. For Bird Note, I'm Arianna Rebel. |
