| 0:30.0 | Today, Merrick Garland delivers remarks putting to bed some of the questions about whether the Department of Justice intends to hold accountable the leaders and funders of the insurrection. |
| 0:39.0 | Sebastian Gorka and the Pillow Man are the latest to sue the one-sixth committee as former Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham cooperates and the committee considers holding their public hearings during prime time. |
| 0:50.0 | I'm Allison Gil. |
| 0:51.0 | Hey everybody. Today on the anniversary of the attack on the Capitol, aimed at usurping the peaceful transition of power, I'll be talking with one of the heroes that held the line that day, Officer Harry Dunn, who wrote an op ed alongside Officer Gnell about holding those responsible accountable. |
| 1:11.0 | I'll be going over the speech Merrick Garland gave to the employees of the Department of Justice and finally I'll be joined by Amy Carrero for the good news later in the show. |
| 1:22.0 | We do have a lot to get to so let's hit the hot notes. |
| 1:25.0 | Hot notes. |
| 1:27.0 | As you may have heard today, Attorney General Merrick Garland gave an incredibly important speech on the progress and the future of the investigation into the attack on the Capitol one year ago today. |
| 1:40.0 | As we all know, many people have been left wondering what the Department of Justice has been doing or not doing because of its own policy. |
| 1:48.0 | And because of that policy, as you know, the Department is barred from discussing publicly specific crimes and ongoing investigations and that silence has made Merrick Garland a target because politics abhor as a vacuum. |
| 2:02.0 | Real and reasonable concern has been growing given no public indication of an investigation into the leaders, funders and inciders of the coup. |
| 2:09.0 | I was expecting Garland to come out today and continue with the rhetoric he's been limited to since the beginning, but in fact, he went quite a bit further than I expected him to go and he did it without violating policy without jeopardizing investigations and prosecutions and without violating the civil rights and civil liberties of current and future criminal defendants. |
| 2:31.0 | Some of the standout moments in his speech today for me include his introduction which laid out three main points that he would eventually tie together. |
| 2:41.0 | He said quote, we will defend our democratic institutions from attack. |
| 2:45.0 | We will protect those who served the public from violence and threats of violence and we will protect the cornerstone of our democracy, the right of every eligible citizen to cast a vote that counts. |
| 2:58.0 | Now the attack on the Capitol wasn't just about the violence that day. |
| 3:03.0 | It was about a vast conspiracy that started much earlier to foment lies about voter fraud which were designed to be used as a catalyst to raise money and then pass laws that threaten the right to vote and the rise of domestic terror and extremism in the United States as well. |
| 3:19.0 | And I'm glad he acknowledged that they are all inextricably tied together. He goes on to talk about the violent attack on the Capitol and says this with increasing numbers of individuals having breached the Capitol. |
| 3:32.0 | Members of the Senate and the House of Representatives, including the president of the Senate, vice president Mike Pence had to be evacuated as a consequence proceedings in both chambers were disrupted for hours. |
| 3:47.0 | Interfering with a fundamental element of American democracy, the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to the next. |
| 3:58.0 | Those involved must be held accountable and there is no higher priority for us at the Department of Justice. |
