Eight years ago, in 2017, Donald Trump addressed the nation from the west front of the

U.S. Capitol, capping off an improbable run to the presidency.

He painted a dark vision of a country in decline.

And the gangs and the drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much

unrealized potential. This American carnage stops right here and stops right now.

Well, obviously, a lot has happened since then.

A deadly pandemic, multiple wars overseas.

Dozens of criminal charges were brought against Trump himself after he left office.

He was accused of working to overturn the 2020 election and egging on a violent
