Summary

In this Frankly, Nate refers to a favorite timeless book series, The Lord of the Rings, to describe 'the nine rings for mortal men' - behavioral tendencies that are common among humans based on our evolutionary nature but become counterproductive within modern culture. These traits drive the growth of the Superorganism through 'one ring to rule them all', the amassing of power and the synergy of agricultural surplus, fossil energy, money, and Artificial Intelligence. Can this out of control power dynamic be broken and redirected away from the influence of the One Ring?  Will we have the courage and wisdom to stop our drive to amass power as we approach the Great Simplification?

One ring to rule them all. One ring to find them. One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. Greetings. Ooh, theatrics. I am back from traveling. Lots on my mind. Lots going on in the world. Yes, I am doing another

0:25.0

Tolkien reference from Lord of the Rings. I've been putting together an advanced kind of theory

0:34.4

of how power is driving humans towards a cliff, quite frankly. So today I'd like

0:43.9

to talk about the one ring of power metaphorically from the Lord of the Rings. And before I get to

0:51.9

that, I'd like to talk about the nine rings for mortal men, which are

0:57.0

behavioral tendencies of our species, homo sapiens, that have been successful for 290,000

1:06.0

years in ancestral tribes on the savannah in Tanzania, Kenya, Africa, but are misfiring in our current

1:14.2

globalized, technologically advanced, energy-rich culture. I do periodically get criticism that the

1:26.3

content on this channel is derivative of the same themes.

1:31.7

And while that's true, the content is derivative of we're animals, we're human.

1:38.0

Behaviors matter.

1:39.6

The energy and money and growth are this synergy that is pulling humanity forward and we're

1:48.5

impacting ecology and ecosystems of Earth.

1:51.6

It's kind of obvious once you see it, and yet if your hair was on fire, I would continue

1:56.2

to point out that your hair was on fire until you recognized it. So the nine rings for mortal men.

2:03.6

First of all, we're animals, we're primates.

2:06.6

Humans are predators.

2:08.6

We don't think about it much.

2:11.6

But ancestral times we coordinated to hunt a game.

2:18.3

There was an EROI equation there, optimal forging theory, and today we are hunting using

2:26.3

fossil energy to do most of our labor, but we're hunting bargains and we're hunting good investment

2:33.3

returns where we invest a little and get a lot.
