Summary

As midterms draw near, President Trump and his policies will be put under more scrutiny than ever, but despite significant losses in off-year elections, some in the party still feel confident about their chances in 2026. Among them is Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who sat down with Bret on Thursday to explain why. Senator Thune explains his opposition to extending Obamacare health subsidies, whether the population should be concerned about a war with Venezuela, and what Republicans are doing to address families grappling with high costs. Fox News Podcasts presents the Brett Bear podcast with Fox News chief political anchor Brett Bear.

Welcome to Washington. I'm Brett Bear. We're up on Capitol Hill tonight on the Senate side because we will speak in just matter of moments to the Senate Majority Leader John Thune about the issues of the day, about health care, affordability, about Venezuela and other topics. Senator Thune, thanks for the time. Great to be with you. Thanks, Brad. The health care question. People are leaving. It's not dealt with. How does it get fixed? Well, I think that the Democrats can have to come to the table and realize that a straight

1:12.5

extension of Obamacare subsidies is not a sustainable future for the American people. You know,

1:20.2

the Democrats talk about affordability, the least affordable thing that the American people have

1:23.8

on there, you know, in front of them today, is the cost of health care. Because if you're buying your insurance in the Obamacare Exchange, since it's since its inception, a little

1:33.3

over a decade ago, premiums have gone up 221 percent. And you look at that same time period,

1:38.3

the CPI, the price we pay for everything else, has gone up about 39%. So you're looking at multiples, you know,

1:45.0

several hundred percent more for health care, and that's not a sustainable future for the American

1:49.0

people. Here's what you said last time we talked, end of September, about this. The premium tax

1:55.2

credit issue is something we're willing to have a conversation about, but the fact the matter is

1:59.4

it's rife with waste, fraud, and abuse, needs reforms, I said, but you're willing to work on this issue in particular? You said, yeah, I mean, part of this is the base Obamacare program is not going to be affected. What's going to be affected is the enhancements the Democrats added when they had the majorities, but we're willing to have that conversation. You've got to do that. You can't do that in the context of a hostage-taking situation, which is where we are right now. Did they win the hostage-taking situation as far as the politics here? Because there's a lot of people that are going to see their health care premiums skyrocket. Yeah. And in that marketplace, which represents about 7% of the American people

2:36.5

who get their insurance through the Obamacare exchanges, particularly those that are above the

2:41.7

400% poverty level, which is where the Biden COVID bonus has kicked in. Yeah, they're seeing

2:47.9

some increase. Now, there are other things they can do. They can shift around at different markets, but the fact of the matter is, we're open to fixing and addressing this, but you've got to do it in a way, Brett, that actually solves the problem and lowers costs. If you stay on this path right now with all the waste, fraud, and abuse, the same thing is true today that I said last September. And that is that there are no income caps, there are zero dollar premiums, there are literally millions of people in the exchange.
