Magazine. Secretary Rice, thanks for joining us.

Pleasure to be with you, Brett, as always.

I want to talk about your essay, and I read through it. It's really interesting.

But I want to just ask broadly, as you look at foreign affairs right now, it's a chaotic world.

What do you think the biggest threat for the U.S. is right now?

Well, there are multiple threats. I think one of the biggest things that's changed recently is that we have this great power conflict with China, with Russia, that's territorial. That brings militaries into play in ways that we haven't seen for a very long time. Obviously, the Middle

East is always a source of tension and problem and Iran's activity there, Iran's aggressiveness

there. And of course, in the Asia-Pacific, there's always

North Korea that stands up and shows its face whenever you forget that North Korea is a problem.

And so, Brett, really the whole purpose of this essay was to say that there are going to be

multiple lines of threat in the international system.

What we need most is American power and American principle to deal with them.
