I'm Ruth Alexander. This week, our story about the death toll of Grenfell Tower in London was

broadcast on both the Radio 4 and World Service editions of this programme. Instead of repeating that again here,

we have another item for you. Hurricane Harvey has caused flooding

and devastation to the southeast coast of the USA. Many commentators have said that Houston

has experienced a one in 500 year storm. But what exactly

does this mean? Especially as the media and experts have been keen to point out

that Houston has suffered from a number of large storms recently.

It hasn't seemed to have been 500 years since the last one.

And it reminded us of two years ago when the north of England experienced flooding

and thousands of homes were affected.

At the time the rains were being labelled by experts at a one in 100 year event.

Wesley Stevenson and I covered this in December 2015, but the story begins long before then in
