Summary

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week we have a rare throwback recording to 2011 (pre-Distraction Pieces Podcast) with Pip, Kae Tempest, Musa Okwonga and Polarbear!

The Mount Rushmore of spoken word right here folks, captured in a recording Pip uncovered while late-night trawling through the vaults by candlelight. This was originally recorded on camera but there was also a mic in the middle of the room - though as you will hear, it's a bit of a recording sandwich with the slightly more decent recording forming the bread and the slightly more raw camera audio forming the filling. Follow? Nice. It's a really cool chat, incredibly freeform and without defined topics and certainly not recorded with the shape and craft you might expect of late-era Distraction Pieces. But think of it as the 'Distraction Pieces Basement Tapes' - a lively chat of varying audio quality which functions nicely as a time capsule. It's also uncanny hearing about predictions for the following decade - eerie how much has been manifested since... The audio has been cleaned up a touch but sometimes with this kind of sound, things can get worse the more you try and scoop out of it, so just allow your ears to get familiar with it and you'll be grand. Enjoy - it's like sitting at the table where it happened!

Welcome, welcome, welcome. This is the distraction pieces podcast episode 665. And we've got a really

0:08.0

special one this week, right? End of last year, I did a few different kind of roundtabley type

0:15.1

episodes. And one of them was with Musa Okwanga and Polar Bear. And we talked a lot about how our dear friend K Tempest was meant to be joining us but couldn't make it.

0:27.8

And then a little while after that, I was going through a hard drive.

0:31.8

And I remembered a conversation that we had in 2011 that I recorded before the Distraction

0:39.7

Pieces podcast was a thing. It wasn't even a twinkle in its father's eye. I'm, I'm,

0:45.3

I'm its father. We recorded a little videoed conversation called One Drink. It was literally

0:52.9

upstairs in a pub. And I thought I'd get buddy

0:55.8

peace to polish that and we could put that out as a conversation. Now, a few things to warn you

1:00.2

about. Number one, at this point, Kay was Kate. Their pronouns were she, she, her. They are no

1:08.2

longer. But that's worth knowing just for the reference of this.

1:12.3

The other thing that's worth noting is there was a point where the audio stopped recording

1:18.7

and I didn't notice for a little while and I had to switch. So we had to switch to the

1:24.4

audio just off the camera, which isn't amazing.

1:28.6

Obviously, the body piece is going to have polished it to make it the best it's ever been,

1:33.2

but it does just mean it's kind of in three parts.

1:39.1

There's one part that was just recorded on a little microphone in the middle of the room,

1:43.3

one part that was recorded on a camera across in the middle of the room, one part that was

1:44.4

recorded on a camera across the room and another part back on the microphone once I realized.

1:51.2

But yeah, I thought this would be a nice walk down memory lane going back 15 years because all

1:58.4

three of these wonderful people have had multiple appearances on the

2:02.6

distraction pieces podcasts since then. So yeah, I hope you're going to enjoy this one.
