February 16th, and our guest will be one of the greatest American songwriters who ever lived,

Steve Earle. Steve was just a 17-year-old San Antonio kid when Willie's 1973 masterpiece, Shotgun Willie, effectively invented Outlaw Country.

The song Local Memory was his favorite on the album then, and it still is now.

popped out because I was just beginning to write songs that didn't have her girl's name as a title

but I had never noticed a country song that was literature in the way that that song is intentionally.

The idea of memory as a character.

And the way I saw that character is it's like poltergeist.

You know, it's like a creature that is loose.

Once it's out of the bottle or whatever, it's loose in this town and it's wreaking havoc and it's forever.

Other guests this season include legendary rock and roll producer Don Wuss, who produced

Willie's landmark 1993 album across the borderline. He tells us that the record's title song is

his favorite of all the tracks he's ever recorded. We'll also talk to Willie's daughter, folk singer Amy Nelson, about Willie's 2001 version

of Rainbow Connection, a song that she had been bugging her dad to record ever since she first

heard Kermit the Frog sing it back in 1979.
