Summary

"SEX, DEATH, AND NOISY NEIGHBOURS" A killer has come to town. The victims are connected; each pointing to the next, as if in answer to the question: Who is The One? Is it Peter Reynolds: mild-mannered office clerk pouring petrol through his neighbour’s letterbox in the middle of the night? Is it Wayne Dolan: a man whose sexual fantasies about his neighbour spiral into dangerous obsession when he learns of her secret life as a dominatrix? Or is it Gaz: leader of three friends who love nothing more than sex, weed and partying? All women are easy prey for his charms. All except Sally. And the one who doesn’t want him, is the one he has to have – whether she likes it or not. Mick Nixon has to find the connection, because people are disappearing - and if he and Sally are ever going to share more than just lunch, he’d better hurry up, or they could be next. A dark, funny, and at times horrific ride, One Among the Sleepless is a thriller set just below the surface of suburban existence. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll throw it through your neighbour’s window tied to a house brick! “A tale that’s harder to put down than a delicious bad habit.” Walt Kolenda. Examiner.com

Introduction to One Among the Sleepless, April 2021

0:06.0

Hello listeners and welcome back to One Among the Sleepless, even though I'm sure many of you have never been here before.

0:12.0

This was my first novel written around the turn of the millennium.

0:17.0

So at the time of me writing this, the book which I self-published under my own seed publishing banner is 21 years old.

0:27.4

My only mantra when I was writing the book was write a book that you will enjoy writing and one that you would like to read and to hell with

0:38.0

trends and whatever publishers want. And so yeah I did enjoy writing it very much it made me chuckle a lot and actually

0:46.6

made me cry a couple of times too which was weird I didn't expect that but anyway

0:51.9

the downside of having a to hell with publishers approach is that you

0:57.3

end up with a book that probably won't get published unless you do it yourself. So I could have spent a lot of time, money and effort

1:06.3

mailing out crisp new manuscript copies to agents and publishing houses and what

1:11.6

have you, but I didn't want to do that because I knew it was just

1:15.2

going to be a waste of my time, money and effort and so instead I spent what

1:20.9

savings I had at the time on publishing it myself.

1:25.2

It sold well wherever it was on sale, but distributing the book, you know, going around collecting

1:32.3

the sales revenue, It was a lot of shoe leather, and if I'm

1:36.6

honest, kind of a waste of time. But then, you know, circumstances in the lives of my wife and I meant that we upped stakes and moved from Brighton over to Ireland, where I became an EFL teacher and just gave up writing altogether.

1:56.2

It was like a phase in my life and it was over.

1:59.8

Or at least it was until 2006 when a friend of mine who had stumbled upon something called

2:07.6

podcasting, specifically podcast novels of the kind that used to be on a website called podiobooks.com

2:15.0

contacted me and he said you should check this out it could be just a thing for

2:21.0

you and one among the sleepless so I did check it out and I thought, oh yeah, I can do this and so I did. I went out and I bought a cheap plastic Skype microphone, which was all I could find in Dublin at the time because this was

2:35.4

years and years ahead of the commonplace availability of podcasting microphones we have these days,
