I'd like to talk about one of the seven points on a creed that John Wooden's father gave

him upon graduating from grade school, which was, drink deeply from good books.

I'm going to point this out because books, the pursuit of constant learning, is what saved

my life, or at least made the life that I have now possible.

You see, I was raised in a very dysfunctional environment.

My parents divorced when I was 18 months old.

I ended up with a step monster, I mean step mother, when I was four years old, who, because

I was of the other woman, did all she could to try to extricate me from the family at

every turn.

And I learned quickly that I wasn't necessarily naturally gifted academically or athletically.

Now I always got good grades and I did well in sports, but I always had to study or

practice three times harder and longer than most anybody else around me.

But fortunately, I've always been a seeker.

I've always been looking for that edge, you know, just to learn something a little bit

more, something that would give me a unique advantage.

I've always looked for tools, resources, tricks, and tips.

These not only made up the difference, but gave me an edge.

Starting out as an entrepreneur, I sought the same advantages, mostly to make up from

my lack of experience or educational background or natural innate talent.
